All You Need To Know About Network Cabling And Cat 6 Cables

Have you always wondered how computers get connected to one another or how two are more computers able to share common printers, scanners etc? Were you curious to learn more about computer hardware and networking hardware? Then read on. Find some interesting information simply presented for you, so that you get a clearer insight into networking cables and about Cat 6 cables, the most popularly used network cables.

What is Network Cabling?

A cable is a medium through which information passes from one network device to the other.

Network cabling is basically something that is done to connect different networks to each other via cables. Distance can be maintained between networks via Ethernet for a few meters or internet for huge distances. Various types of cables are used for this task depending on the size of the network along with the arrangements of its links and nodes. There are various forms of cables that are used in this form of connection.

Here are a few of them-

1.Twisted pair

Just like the name suggests, these cables are twisted together. The requirement of this twisting is to cancel the electromagnetic interference or crosstalk from other various sources. This form of cabling is mostly done in homes, offices, public usage spaces etc. Twisted pair cabling is available in two varieties-

These types of cables are not susceptible to radio and electrical frequency interference and they can also be placed in sensitive environments which may be vulnerable to electrical currents. The only major drawback with these types of cables is that they are expensive.

It is the most common cable used in computer networking. UTP cables are the most common kind of copper wiring which is used to connect home and business computers. These cables are the least expensive and are often preferred for short and medium length connections because of them being cheaper compared to optical fibers and coaxial cables.

The standard connector used for UTP cabling is an RJ-45 connector.

2.Fiber optic

This type of fiber optic cabling has a center glass core surrounded by layers of protective materials, which transmits light instead of electronic signals thus doing away with the problem of electrical interference. This also makes it ideal for certain environments that contain huge amounts of electrical intervention. The outer insulating jacket of these cables is made of Teflon or PVC to combat interference. These cables are mostly used for connecting networks between buildings, because of its increased immunity to the effects of dampness and lights. Fiber optic cables are slightly more expensive than copper cabling.

3. Coaxial

These cables restrain the movement of electromagnetic waves inside the cable. Theyare mostly used for transmission of television signals and other high-speed homenetworking applications.

CAT6 Cables

Category 6 cable commonly referred to as (CAT 6) belongs to the sixth generation of twisted pair Ethernet cabling. It was designed to support Gigabit Ethernet data rates i.e. 1 gigabit per second (Gbps).

When compared to CAT 5 and CAT 5e cables, CAT 6 cables have much better features with firm specifications for crosstalk and system noise.

These cables have excellent standard capacity of up to 250 MHz and are usually used up to a length of 100meters. The latest CAT 6a cables have a higher standard performance of 500 MHz

How Category 6 (Cat 6) Cables work

Disadvantages of CAT 6

In spite of all these drawbacks CAT6 cables are very popular and are the most widely used type of networking cables. Do visit https://www.netwerkkabel.eu/cat6-kabels/ to know more about the different types of cables that are available today.
